Fiv... Sh*t TEN Fun Games!

After having a discussion with a housemate about how games seem to have veered away from actually being fun and turned into a graphics contest and how close to reality they can get. I've decided to make a list of recent (ish) games which I think are fun and enjoyable to play! It was initially five but then after FURTHER discussions with my other housemate (@larky1990), it's the biiig TEN!

10. Lego Star Wars.
What better than Star Wars? Oh that's right.. Playing them as Lego. I had so much fun revisiting all the major set pieces as a Lego character and discovering new areas with each one ( buuuuuy it. Gooble gobble).

9. Fez.
A 2D man in a 3D world. Yes it was challenging but still a whole lotta fun at the same time. It was unique with such a large depth and scale. And when you first turn the world and see a whole new world (started singing Aladdin there), and a different perspective opens before you, it was simply breathtaking. Come on Phil Fish. Make no. 2 without blowing yourself up.

8. Skate.
OPM - heaven is a half pipe. Yes! OPM. Skate made that mechanic that appeared in Tony Hawks next gen ( project 8) and turned it into a spectacular game. I spent hours on both 1 and 2 perfecting lines with my buddy. Yeah... I have friends (statement may not actually be true).

7. Saints Row 3.
GTA on roids and snorting cocaine whilst pooping out of a plane. I know. It's the perfect analogy for how insane this game was. They took all the crazy ideas that people had thought up and put them in one giant game. Nothing beats sucking up pedestrians in a cannon and launching them to the moon.

6. Burnout: Paradise.
Launching a car over a jump at 160 mph on a bridge would sound dangerous. But not in Burnout Paradise. Fuck yeah! This game ruled. One of the few driving games with co-op and done well. It was always fun cruising round with Friends... and ramming them into a wall. Lol. Rofl.

5. Broforce.
This game. I fucking love it! I've already written about this in a previous blog saying how much fun it is to tackle a horde of enemies with your buddies and destroy the world in the process. And it's still not even finished! Which means there's more BRO's to be released and more levels! Win. Win. Win.

4. Crackdown.
One of the first games I got with my Xbox 360. Crackdown lets you pick up cars and hurtle them towards unsuspecting enemies. You could jump up skyscrapers in seconds, kill the enemy atop then raise him above your head to show your kill. Theeeeen throw him off and watch his body bounce! (Mini chortle). Even collecting the orbs seemed satisfying to me and when they released the harpoon gun, I loved killing my mate then pinning him to walls. I know...I'm a bastard.

3. Portal 1 and 2.
Portal always gets high praise and why shouldn't it. It's funny, challenging, addictive and different. Walking into a test chamber you would stare at the obstacle before you and assess how to take it on. Then in Two you could play co-op (I LOVE CO-OP). And it was always fun to make the infinity loop and fall forever!

2. Super Mario 3D World.
I love my WiiU. Even more so with each purchase. And this purchase was no exception. Join Mario and the gang in an adventure through 8+ worlds. Each level is fun and vibrant and immerses the player in each world. The fact you can dress as a cat is just a happy positive. The music is nothing to be ignored either. It brings that happy feeling and is incredibly memorable. But my favourite part was Bowser's World. Travelling up the pipe and seeing this colourful land stand before you is something definitely worth seeing.

1. Rayman: Legends.
Granted, you may not rate this as your number one BUT holy shit it should at least be in the top three. I'd never played a Rayman and it was my Brother who showed me this and I'm glad he did. It plays as a platformer and is definitely one of the best. The backgrounds to each stage are beauties to look at. Tight controls. The levels themselves challenging and with Ubisoft constantly releasing daily challenges, it keeps the game fresh. The best. THE BEST part though? At the end of each world is a music level where you have to run and jump in time to the music through various obstacles and enemies. It. Is. Awesome!!!! I've showed everyone who has passed by my house and each person has commented on how much fun the game is. If this game was a barrel.. It would be full of laughs (Idiom of the day).

Cheers for reading. More soon...keep a look out for a YouTube channel!

BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

BROFORCE! THIS GAME IS SO EPIC AND FILLED WITH RAGE AND TESTOSTERONE THAT IF A FEMALE PLAYS IT HER OVARIES WILL EXPLODE!!!!

I did consider doing the entire review in caps but it would blow your mind. Broforce is still in the Beta version but still amazingly good fun. It cost just over £10 on steam but definitely worth it. Broforce is done an a 8-bit/ retro way and considering everyone has a hard on (myself included) for that retro look and the amount of shit that goes on screen it makes sense to.
The object is to battle through each stage with your Bro's (or if you want the ultimate test - Bro it alone) and kill the devil at the end. Then you jump onto a CHOPPA and the levels explodes...obviously. The controls are simple enough and pretty god damn tight! Arrows keys to move (surprisingly), Z shoots, X is a special attack and C is CQC / rescue/ HIGH FIVE! Although the controls are simple, there are still many parts to master. Like riding a pig. Or flying through the air on gas canister to traverse the stage. The latter more dangerous.
Enemies range from the puny and small, to giant beast dogs! But they all die in a mass of explosions!
The game fucking rules. I don't think there was one point where there wasn't an explosion on screen. Maybe the start but I'd make sure that in the first...10 seconds something/someone was on fire. Everything is destructible which is both good and bad. Good because it gives you the freedom to play the level any way you want. Bad because you'll accidentally kill yourself...a lot.
Each character or Bro has a unique special and attack which changes how the levels play. To get more Bro's you have you rescue prisoners in cage that give you an extra life. After freeing so many you are rewarded with a new BRO! These include:
Mr Anderbro - who can dodge bullets and punch through EVERYTHING.
Bronan - armed with his trusty sword can send shock waves that mutilates anything in it's way. He also does an Arnie GGUUUUUDAAAAH when you use his special. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khWeDJP6riU)

 EXXXXPLOOOSION!!!

I could name more but I don't want to spoil too much. One play through will take 90 minutes to 2 hours but there's countless amounts of fun to be had and I found myself playing this many times over. The best way to play is multiplayer though. A high five will slow down time and make everything more epic by tenfold!
Last thing I'm going to mention is the sound. This game just bleeds awesomeness. When you move you hear the small patter of the characters feet on the ground. The explosions sound larger than life and would perforate a small child's eardrum. By far though the greatest sound...the enemies dying. The screams are hilarious. I'm sure one is a sound bite of Homer Simpson. AND a Wilhelm Scream. Even the music feels like something epic is happening AT ALL TIMES.
To sum up *ahem* (add epic voice) BROFORCE IS LIKE BEING THE ULTIMATE MAN AND STOPPING EVIL IN A HAIL OF GUNFIRE AND EXPLOSIONSSSS! DONT BE A PUSSY...BUY THIS MOTHERFUCKING GAME!!!! AND ITS NOT EVEN FINISHED!!

Addendum: keep your eyes open for a video review coming soon chums!!

Cheers,

My Top Five Games I Hate...With Additional Swearing

So I know I call myself optimistic and I suppose I am. But sometimes I lose my shit with games...like completely. Just to make you aware I am gunna be swearing my tits off here solely for the fact I'll wind myself up about each game. This was also a ball ache and took me ages because I was trying to rack my brain so I had to search EVERY game on the PS2 (yes every title AND I couldn't even find one!). Also you'll have to bear with me on some of them, I will explain! So... here we go. Hold on tight. (Warning: Spoilers).

5. James Bond 007: Nightfire - GameCube/ PS2/ Xbox.
This is only being placed at no. five because it came with the GameCube I acquired and I don't like trying to rate something without seeing/playing it all the way through...however. This game sucks. I could only withstand 15 minutes- TOPS - before I turned it off in a rage. The graphics are fucking awful! I've seen better Playstation games! And for that matter a SNES games! The cars look like literal squares. And the sounds....the FUCK!!!!! I'm done.

To sum up. It is awful.

4. Deus Ex. Human Revolution - Xbox360/ PC/ PS3.
Right. So Deus Ex. Its an awesome game. I loved upgrading my character into a stealthy dealer of death, and attempting to just ruin everyone's day by playing as a complete bastard. Whats that? You've been promoted to "crummy desk Sergeant?" GIVE A FUCK! So like I said its awesome. What isn't awesome and actually changed my entire perspective on the game was the ending. Eidos you cheap bastards. Instead of some brilliant cut scene where I thought I'd see Jensen killing himself or choosing whatever, I'm "treated" with black and white footage of Earth???? No no no. I play games to get away from this shit, not to be dropped right back in it during the fucking game!!!!!!
Ruined.

3. Rise of the Robots - SNES.
If you haven't seen any footage of this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYUeO_yk9To
Continue sum this up perfectly, "nothing about this game was entertaining or fun at all". Yup. I remember my dad getting me and brother this. The title screen had me super excited! We then had a fight and my smiling face went straight to a "da fuq is this??" The game uses pre-rendered C.G.I sprites rather than pixel art or digitized sprites. Essentially it just looks buals (balls!). There is limited moves and even then it feels super slow. My problem with this game is....why was it made?

2. Rage - Xbox360/ PC/ PS3.
This follows the same trend as Deus Ex but it wound me up even more, if its even possible (hence why its no. 2). Same applies, this game is a sexy looking game and they even got some decent folk to do some of the voices (like John Goodman!) and considering it was sold as a similar game to Fallout and boasted about Mad Max style world, which it did. But in my eyes it fell short. Super short. Yes, there was opens worlds but they seemed linear. How do you manage to make something openly linear??? HOW? The game was put onto two discs which I expected to make the game huge, and it did. But wait, the player wants to go back and explore the first area? Na fuck that, limited freedom is where its at! Like I said, the game is amazing but like @mattaconda (https://twitter.com/Mattaconda) said,"there's only so much lipstick you can put on a pig."
When I finished it I just stared at the credits and genuinely thought,"well that was a fucking waste, think I'll go outside." And it didn't even take that long and I was attempting to make it last...Fuck you Rage. I'll show you some RAGE!!!!!

1. Red Faction: Armageddon - Xbox360/ PC/ PS3.
Here it is. Possibly my most hated game. THIS FUCKING GAME! I don't think I've ever been so disappointed at a game. This is probably because I was, and maybe still am, a huge fan of the first two on the PS2 and Guerrilla on the 360. The first two for the ability to smash the environment and getting the rail gun to shoot through walls and kill enemies. Guerrilla because they took the destroying environments to the next level. They gave you all of Mars to go crazy with. Here's a giant hammer. See that building? You can flatten it! One of my favourite things was just wielding this super hammer and just fucking shit up. Then they released this one in 2011. And ruined everything!!!! Why the fuck would you decide to put the player back in the ground on a linear path after giving them the freedom of the world?! I know the first two where underground but they worked because they probably didn't have the capacity on the PS2 to attempt what they did with Guerrilla. But seriously. Even at the start they give the player a little teaser. "Oh remember all that cool shit like blowing up buildings and smashing pipelines with hammers? Yeah none of that anymore." If I had to compare this to anything it would be a stripper. They both had me super excited when they started but at the end I'm left disappointed. And all alone...again.

Addendum: If you haven't notice I do like open games, so when a games is labelled as such, I will probably try it out. But when it undersells like the above, I tend to lose it.

Now I know the majority of the games on the list are from the "next-gen" era, but it's because I couldn't find many from the retro era that I hated. Maybe because there wasn't as much choice and the developers had to make sure the game was perfect so they could make a profit. Or maybe because back when I was a young'n, I thought everything was amazing and colourful (except Rise of the Robots). And now I'm older and wiser and can see more faults and I'm more skeptical. Or its that the game developers don't seem to spend as much time on certain games. Whatever it is these games above...pissed me off massively.

If you have any different or agree with me let me know!
Cheers,

Guns? Big Guns? I'm More of a Pinata Man!

In the gaming world today, many things revolve around blowing the shit into something (I'm looking at you Call of Dooty and BertleField), but don't you just sometimes wanna step back from it all and play something with less violence and objectives?

Yes you do! This isn't to say I don't like running around and chopping people in half or cruising around Los Santos knocking foo's out! Sometimes its just nice to sort out your garden and raise some pinata's.

Viva Fudgin' Whackin' Pinata! Look at those sexy colours! This game only breeds happy thoughts! I picked this up for about 2 quid and I'm super happy I did! It's a sandbox like harvest moon. Story??? Not to sure. Do you need one?! Sort out your garden and get some piñata's, which in this game are like wild animals.
So it starts out you inherit this land but it's a proper shithole, and as you progress you get different equipment which can be upgraded. The piñata's are caught by meeting certain requirements, so obviously the first ones you meet are simple ones. For example for a worm you need to have decent grass. All the wild piñata's are black and white and when they become part of your garden they become bright and vivid. (Addendum: all the piñata's have super cute names!)
You need to buy habitat's on top of the requirements and then you can breed them. The breeding game is the only bit I wasn't to keen on if I'm honest. You have to navigate the pinata through an "obstacle" course (I use that term loosely) and then an egg is dropped off by a stalk like chick.
You can decorate the garden however you want. Putting in fire lamps attracts moths. Make a pond and then in comes frogs. Simple, easy stuff. Your garden expands after a while so you can fit in more and more stuuuff!

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

The characters in the game can help you in certain ways. There's this bloke who just looooves nuts (phrasing)! And he'll just give you them if you talk to him. You can have some chick come and look after your seeds and fruit. I never used her just so I didn't have to spend money. I'm a tight ass. Then there's the evil dude who makes sour piñata's which try to come and ruin your day. You can either kill them or even better, make them transform into a pinata for your garden!
You also get tasks where you earn money (and achievements) if you finish them. It's usually someone needs a specific type of pinata, so the player needs to put them in a crate and send them off. Easy enough, but it's not forced upon you (one is but its a tutorial) so you can choose to do what you want within the game essentially, or when to take the tasks.

This guy looooves nuts...ladies...stand back.

Lastly but not least is the best part of the game, it's presentation. It. Is. AMAZING! When you start getting more and more pinata's in your garden it's nice to sit back and admire it's beauty. Seriously. I absolutely hate that word but there isn't any other word to describe it. The different colours of the pinata's just complement the whole screen perfectly. The music is just small background noise which is fine but the game shines with its looks and presentation.
Right well in conclusion if you can find this game cheap and fancy a break from all the violence of games today you should definitely do it. It is a gorgeous thing to look at and the colours will probably cheer you up. And if you're tripping balls it'll probably be amazing.

Memorable memories.

Oh boy! Do you like nostalgia? No? Well too bad! In this months post I will mostly be reminiscing about old school games I've had the most fun on and that I can easily remember. It's gunna be a top five maybe ten, depends how well my memory serves me!.....Turns out its ten!

10. Black and White- PC.

This game I remember playing on our family PC in 2000/2001 (if - ironically -my memory serves me right). I remember thinking at the time the game was huge and how crisp the graphics were! I loved playing it and been given the ultimate dilemma... Monkey, tiger or cow? Naturally the obvious choice was the cow, I mean what's weirder than a giant cow throwing a villager into the sea? That's right, nothing. For its time, the games morality choices genuinely made me think about what I'd do. Trying to get that perfect balance of power and the love of the people is something I just couldn't master.

9. Secret of Monkey Island - PC.

I remember unwrapping this game and getting a wheel where you had to match the face on the screen when you loaded the game to get the code/ password for making it start, which as a kid I thought was ingenious! I think this was one of the very first games I'd played on the PC and remembering it just brings back good memories and the trial and error of matching everything with anything since I had no idea what to do at that young age. Then when they re-released it as the special edition and you could select the original graphics was just awesome! And finally the best part was the witty dialog which all these point and click games seemed to have at the time.

 8. Dynasty Warriors 2 - PS2.
I didn't actually own this game. When the PS2 came out this was one of the games my neighbour got and I spent many a night round his till stupid o'clock in the morning attempting to kill everyone on the map. It's more about the memory of playing this with my buddy or my brother and feeling like an ultimate force, wiping out everyone who stood in our way. But there was one thing that put the fear in me...Lu Bu. If anyone has played this version of Dynasty Warriors, you will remember that Lu Bu was fucking nails! At the battle for He Lao gate (once again, memory is probably wrong) is where you encounter him first. All I remember is trying to kill him, Lu Bu not even flinching by my feeble hits, and him chasing me round the map until I died. But let me tell you, a mass of fist pumps were thrown when I did kill him! Ya Done Son!

7. Tetris - Gameboy.
Surely everyone remembers the first time turning this on and hearing that classic tune and watching the blocks slowly tumble down? I sure as hell do! It was like a family game, you could pass it round and see who could get the highest score on one of the fast levels. I can still image my dad screaming at the screen when his triangle piece ruined his entire game, ending his "perfect run". Here's a link to that amazing music that just fits perfectly into this gem.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFlN1NMua5o

6. Super Mario Bros - NES.
Once again, those first seven notes that every child of this generation and more have implanted into their mind. This is one of the games that started it all. Its learning curve was just right and if you died you knew it was your fault. I liked accidentally finding one of the secret pipes and being happy with myself for my lucky stumble! I honestly don't know what else to say about this absolutely classic game. It is one of my favourites but the next five are the ones that I've spent the most time on.

  5. Fable: The Lost Chapters - PC.
Whilst this was only released in 2004, and it is the most recent from all in the list, it still deserves to be in this spot. From the dialog that the N.P.C's say as you pass or during quests, to the combat system, to watching your hero grow and become either an angel or a demon of the world. It truly was, and still is an epic game (possibly still my favourite out of all the fables. Sooo happy the anniversary is this year!). Once again the choices in this made me think about what to do! And if my brother's reading this (which he should cause he's a fan!) it has one of the most memorable and annoying quotes in any game.
"Your health is low. Do you have any food? Or potions??" FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU...

 4. Pokemon - Gameboy.
Pokemon is quite possibly the game I've spent the most time on as a kid. I remember my brother and I using the gameboy link to get all the starter pokemon and just fucking, shit, up! I think I even remember my team (Obviously first three, then Gyarados, Raticate, Pidgeot). Pokemon is one of those games where you can get lost in the world, trying to (pardon the cliche) "catch em all!" Then when you caught one that you thought was different you could test it. That sense of freedom in the game where the player makes the choices is a big thing for me. And when you own the gym badges, a sense of pride in yourself and your Charmander for clawing the shit into an Onix. Even after beating the Elite Four, the game still managed to surprise you with your Rival (Buttucks) turning up for one final battle. Honestly this game was, and still is, an epic quest, and definitely deserves this spot. The next are possibly my all time favourite games though and hopefully you'll agree.

3. Final Fantasy 7 - Playstation.
Final Fantasy 7 was the first game I'd had on my own Playstation waaay back in '97. The way the game opened up its world slowly but still managing to keep it story driven and is one of my favourite things in video games today. Once again, like Pokemon, the choice of who was on your team, was given to the player and each time I spoke to someone about FF7 the team always changed. The summons were something else as well. Admit it. The first time you used Odin or Knights of the Round, it blew your small mind didn't it!? OH or when you got the Golden Chocobo and wondered across the ocean to GET Knights of the Round and Mime. It felt amazing! Or when you eventually take down Ruby and Emerald, the sense of accomplishment is overwhelming. The list goes on. The story, granted, is long winded, but it manages to keep drawing the player in more and more as it goes on. Even the music, be it battle music or the boss fight music, is imprinted in my mind. Final Fantasy 7 definitely left a mark on my childhood and I still play it even to this day. For those that haven't played it...DOOOOO ITTTTTT!

2. Donkey Kong Contry - SNES.
For those who know of JonTron (which should be uuuurvybody!!) you know how much he loves this game. Well, he isn't alone...I fucking love this game! The SNES may be one of my favourite consoles I have owned. The colours were vibrant. The games were fun and original, and this is just one of those games. The introduction just brings a smile to my face. I loved the animals you could use to help with the levels. I loved and hated the barrels levels. Riding in a mine cart was a mass amounts of fun. The backgrounds for each of the different types of worlds were unique as well as the music, especially the eerie music when you were in the mines or tunnels. Then there was the boss battles, where the background was surrounded by banana's, were done as a steady learning curve. Finally there's King K. Rool, the final boss. It was a pattern boss but I didn't mind, I was young and it's aimed at kids so it makes sense to. The music that accompanied it was classic. Starting as a jaunty sea tune, then slowly turning into a serious battle theme. And you have to remember, this was made using very little space on the SNES cartridge. Donkey Kong Country is definitely one of my favourite childhood games, only to be topped by this....

....
Wait for it!

1. Super Mario World - SNES.
That's right ladies and gentlemen! Super Mario World, once again on the SNES. The music. Perfect. The colours. Perfect. The introduction to Yoshi. Perfect! I spent a helluva long time on this epic. When you first get the cape and fly around the levels it is an awesome feeling. Fighting the bosses and watching the animation of how Mario destroyed the castle is witty and funny. When you finally found star road all by yourself, especially at a young age, you felt smart. The game is just full of memorable parts and seeing Bowser in a flying clown was unreal! Maybe I love this because I managed to complete it without any help from anyone at that age. Or maybe it's because it was one of the first games I actually completed fully. Whatever it is, Super Mario World is my favourite game from my childhood and has given me the most memories which make me feel young again.

If anyone has any comments, maybe your team on FF7 or Pokemon, let me know! Or tell me what your favourite old school games are. Cheers!

Steam! Stop Taking My Money

Indie Games.

It's the future (refer to previous post)! If there's one thing I hate to love but love to hate its Steam. If there's a sale on, be it Christmas or Easter, Steam usually gets the majority of my money. So after massing a collection of 100+ games, and not paying my mortgage, I decided to actually play some of the things I'd bought. I will be coming back to my collection of Steam games but I'm only going to cover one today.

No Time To Explain! Or it's abbreviated self N.T.T.E, is an indie game which was released on Steam January 2013. It was actually a flash game on newgrounds but managed to get a kickstarter, even $2000 from Minecraft creator Markus Persson (Thanks Wiki!). Now whilst I'm sure that many have played this game, every time I mentioned this to one of my friends they stared at me dumbfounded! So I decided to explain to them why they need to play this gem. First off, I checked some of the reviews which only gave it 5/10 and I don't know why!

The game starts with the character dancing in his front room when all of a sudden there's a bright flash and your wall breaks down with some one saying,"I am you from the future, there's no time to explain! follow me to...Oh Christ!" aaaand in comes a giant crab and takes him away. I shit you not that's exactly how it starts! Fucking awesome right?! But anyways your future self drops this laser gun which you pick up and here comes the core mechanics of the game! N.T.T.E is much like Super Meat Boy or Mario in that you go from A to B to complete the level, but the creators have put so much thought into the game. The character can only move and jump but the gun is where it's at! The gun is controlled using the mouse and essentially helps you fly across the levels. It's difficult at first but once you get the hang of it, you'll be shooting yourself through the levels...literally.
The levels are well thought out and obviously increase with difficulty as the game goes on. You die. A lot, but the creators made it so when you die you respawn at your last grounded location (you more or less fly across the map). After getting used to the laser gun, they add in other elements to test the player. One of the parallel dimensions put in a cake which makes you get fat and limits the height you can jump/ fly. But it allows you to smash through to areas you otherwise wouldn't be able to reach. Another, and possibly my favourite, is the art dimension. It's more or less a blank, white canvas but when you fire your gun it shades the platforms for a period of time before disappearing. It's well done and helps to add a new and exciting element halfway through an already smart game. It even has Fur Elise playing in the background this dimension...as you do.
Even the story and the dialog is fun and quick witted. It is genuinely humourous and made me chortle and laugh (not lol cause we all know when someone puts lol, we all know it's just bullshit). There wasn't a moment during one of the cut scenes where I didn't make some sort of laughing noise. There's even hats to collect, which sounds tedious and boring, but once you're dressed as a fat horse, flying the air, it's easy to forgive. The put bosses at the end of most of the universes test the player and what they've learnt so far, in that area. This ranges from a giant crab to a weird shark/octopus which drops mines (sharktopus?). Once again you'll die, but the game is quite forgiving.

...Seems legit.

Don't get me wrong N.T.T.E is a fun game but I did almost throw my laptop into space during certain levels. This is one of those games where it will just more or less send you into a rage, much like Super Meat Boy. But, after completing the level you feel a sense of actual achievement because of the time and effort you've put in to it. So luckily my laptop is in full working condition...for now. In total one play through will last about 4...ish hours, you can do speed runs on some of the universes but I personally found I got distracted collecting hats and dressing myself up with monocles and the like.
It's definitely worth how much it costs, even the soundtrack is well done and helps dictate the pace of the game.
So to sum up, No Time To Explain, an excellent little game, with its laugh out loud (it counts) humour, masterful soundtrack and well designed levels and concepts. It's definitely worth a buy and a mention to others.
